Ortiz U,Ana; Silva A,Gonzalo; Urbina P,Angélica; Zapata S.M,Nelson; Rodríguez M,J. Concepción; Lagunes T,Angel.
The maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky) is one of the most widespread pests and causes heavy losses of stored grain throughout the world. Control of this insect is primarily dependent upon continued applications of organophosphorus and pyrethroid insecticides and fumigants as phosphine but the increasing problems with current insecticides drive the need for research and to develop new control methods. The insecticidal effect of leaf powder of tepa, Laureliopsis philippiana (Looser) Shodde, was evaluated against maize weevil under laboratory conditions. The parameters evaluated were adult mortality and emergence, grain weight loss and germination, and residual, repellent and fumigant effect. The highest levels of insect mortality were registered...

Souza,Antonio P.; Marques,Maria R.; Mahmoud,Talal S.; Caputo,Bruno A.; Canhete,Gabriel M.; Leite,Carla B.; Lima,Dênis P. de.
This paper reports on an evaluation of the insecticidal activity of extracts prepared from leaves of Tapirira guianensis Aubl. (Anacardiaceae), Attalea phalerata (Mart. ex Spreng.) Burret (Arecaceae), Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae), and Gomphrena elegans Mart. (Amaranthaceae) and from stems of Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão (Anacardiaceae). Four extracts and 18 fractions with a range of polarities were tested. Ten-gram batches of wheat grains were each nebulized with 1 mL of a separate extract at 10% w/v. After solvent evaporation at 38 ºC, the grains were placed into flasks along with 20 unsexed 10- to 20-day old adult individuals of Sitophilus zeamais. The assessment was carried out on the fifth and tenth day by counting and discarding the dead insects....

Peschiutta,M.L; Arena,J.S; Ramirez Sanchez,A; Gomez Torres,E; Pizzolitto,R.P; Merlo,C; Zunino,M.P; Omarini,A.B; Dambolena,J. S; Zygadlo,J. A.
The insecticidal and antifungal properties of Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) essential oil from the Dominican Republic were investigated under laboratory conditions against two main pests of stored grains: Sitophilus zeamais and Fusarium verticillioides. Although oregano essential oil at 600 μl/l air did not result in a significant mortality of S. zeamais after 24 hours of exposure by fumigation, this essential oil was a powerful acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor in vitro. One of the main components of oregano essential oil, p-cymene, presented fumigant toxicity and AChE inhibition activity against the maize weevil. The L. graveolens essential oil antifungal activity against F. verticillioides was evaluated at 50, 100 and 200 µl/l, and it...

Eficiência comparativa de inseticidas no controle das pragas do arroz armazenado no Estado do Acre. Infoteca-e
FAZOLIN, M..
No controle dessas pragas alguns...

Insecticidal Activity of Peumus boldus Molina Essential Oil against Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Betancur R,Jessica; Silva A,Gonzalo; Rodríguez M,J. Concepción; Fischer G,Susana; Zapata S.M,Nelson.
In stored grains, the main agents diminishing production are insects, which can produce losses between 20% and 80% before harvest or under storage. The insecticidal properties of the essential oil of fresh leaves of Peumus boldus Molina against maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky) adults were determined under laboratory conditions. The highest mortality (100%) was achieved at 4% concentration by contact with a treated glass surface. The same concentration in impregnated corn (Zea mays L.) grain, resulted in 98.7% mortality. Mortality by fumigant action at 6 h was 100% with 35 µL oil in 0.15 L (air volume). Concentrations 1, 2 and 4% of essential oil produced 0% F1 adult emergence. At 10 d of residual effect, the 4% concentration reached 63.7%...

Bustos-Figueroa,Gabriel; Osses-Ruiz,Francisco; Silva-Aguayo,Gonzalo; Tapia-Vargas,Maritza; Hepp-Gallo,Ruperto; Rodríguez-Maciel,J. Concepción.
The insecticidal properties of boldus (Peumus boldus Molina) powder used alone and mixed with lime against adults of maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky) were evaluated under laboratory conditions. Additionally, aeration effects (presence or absence) and temperature (room temperature vs. 3 ºC) on insecticidal properties were studied over time. A mortality rate of 100% was observed at 20 g kg-1 (w/w) of P. boldus powder when used alone and mixed with lime in proportions of 50:50, 60:40, and 80:20. The 50% lethal concentration (LC50) for all treatments was < 5 g kg-1, while LC90 was 11 g kg-1. Mixing corn grains with different insecticidal treatments did not affect maize germination. Temperature and aeration did not influence mortality of maize...

Ortiz U,Margarita; Silva A,Gonzalo; Tapia V,Maritza; Rodriguez M,J. Concepción; Lagunes T,Angel; Santillán-Ortega,Candelario; Robles-Bermúdez,Agustín; Aguilar-Medel,Sotero.
The maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky) and the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum Herbst) are two key pests of stored-grain products worldwide. The insecticidal activity of boldo (Peumus boldus Molina) powder, liquid ethanolic and hexanic extracts against S. zeamais and T. castaneum were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The evaluated variables were mortality, emergence of adult insects (F1), and grain weight loss. The experimental design was completely randomized. The mortality in S. zeamais was 100% even at the lowest powder concentration (0.5% w/w), whereas emergence of F1 adult insects was 0% and grain weight loss was < 0.08%. For T. castaneum, only 8 and 16% w/w powder concentrations reached 100% mortality. The liquid ethanolic...
